"lonestranger" (lonestranger)

Most of the posts and replies that I've been making the last few days in the Kinjaverse have been pretty negative. I'd like to think I've acted politely, but nevertheless I've been calling others out on their bullshit for days now.
In threads such as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I can't help but react to people who resort to insults and don't seem to comprehend or acknowledge what others are conveying. And I expect more tact in front page articles by Gawker Media employees than !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Am I out of line? Should I dial it back a bit? I suppose I'm especially grumpy because of the severe gout attack I've had for over a week, but that's no excuse. My apologies.

Sometimes, people really suck on Gawker. The FP, pretty much all of the time, and now there are even trolls among us here in Oppo. I've been known to snap more than a time or two. Don't appologize, because ultimately people just need to be put in their place sometimes.

To be completely honest I stopped looking at any pages other than Oppo, with the exception of links you guys and girls might post.
Quite literally *ANY* post on there will have *SOMEBODY* looking to shit all over it for no reason. It could be a cop covering an old lady from a flaming timber in a hail of bullets and someone would still say "Nice to see them earning their pay for a change."
You can shout whatever you want on this network and a vast number of people do just that.

This is a normal reaction to the commenteriat on most Gawker Media websites. If you keep looking at Oppo, you will find that the feeling will pass momentarily.

The internet is and always was open to all kinds of people. This is what is great and frustrating about it.
Most of the stupidity I can ignore for three reasons:
1. You can never be sure whether the person is just trolling and gets off on your reasonable or angry reply.
2. Close to trolling but a bit different is when someone made a mistake and you called it. Yet the person keeps on "fighting" despite the fact he or she can't lose his or her face in the anonymity of the web. On the contrary, the anonymity makes it possible for them to bullshit around with wrong "facts" and about spelling mistakes. The moment you - annoyed and frustrated - back off the other person triumphs - for the wrong reasons.
3. If someone really is unbearibly ignorant you will never be able to influence his/her opinion. So why bother?
Even so, I have to admit I had to confront some of the comments I received for my Autobahn article. To my surprise the atmosphere was mostly friendly, though, even when people disagreed with me.
Otherwise, I don't mind trolling and "wrongness" on the internet. They are inevitable in an open forum to the point where I just don't notice it anymore.
I'm visiting Oppo for a few weeks now and I think it's a friendly crowd. Of course there's a difference when it comes to Jalopnik and articles with 30,000+ pageviews. They attract trolls and monads like planes in vaginas attract MH 370 jokes. I'm guilty on the latter myself.
Since "humor" is something else entirely, I won't judge it. Well, not laughing is probably the harshest judgement of all.
